From Struggle to Strength: Justine's Journey to Revolutionize Diabetes Care and Nutrition

When I was sixteen, I received a diagnosis that changed my life: Type 2 diabetes. The moment was overwhelming, but what made it harder was the way my diagnosis was handled. I was handed a pamphlet and told to eat less and exercise more. It sounded simple, but no one asked how much I was already doing or what I was going through. That moment marked the beginning of a long, difficult journey—one that shaped who I am today and why I founded PerformanceRX Nutrition and Fitness.

Facing a Diagnosis That Felt Like a Sentence

At sixteen, I was already trying hard to lose weight. I exercised regularly and watched what I ate, but the diagnosis felt like a punishment rather than a call to action. The advice I received didn’t consider my reality. It didn’t acknowledge the fear I felt toward my own body or the complicated emotions tied to food and movement. Instead of support, I got judgment and misunderstanding.

This lack of empathy led me down a path where food became the enemy and exercise felt like a punishment. I obsessed over weight loss, searching for answers in places that weren’t always safe or healthy. I didn’t have the words to explain my feelings, but I knew I was scared and confused.

The Missing Piece: Understanding the Whole Person

What I needed was a dietitian who saw me as more than just a set of numbers or a glucose monitor. Diabetes doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It affects every part of life—mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and daily routines. The sixteen-year-old girl sitting across from a healthcare provider carries a story, struggles, and hopes that deserve to be heard.

It took me over ten years to untangle my relationship with food and exercise and to learn how to work with my diabetes instead of fighting it. I discovered that food could nourish me, not scare me. Movement could be a gift, not a punishment. This transformation was not easy, but it was necessary.

Building a New Path for Diabetes Care

My experience inspired me to become a dietitian. I wanted to make sure no one else had to spend a decade figuring out how to live with diabetes. I also specialized in diabetes care because I believe early, compassionate support can change the course of someone’s life.

Too often, people with pre-diabetes or early signs of diabetes hear vague warnings like “your numbers are a little high” and are told to lose weight and come back in a year. This approach leaves people without a clear plan or real support. It can feel isolating and discouraging.

At PerformanceRX Nutrition and Fitness, we focus on personalized care that recognizes the whole person. We provide clear, practical guidance tailored to each individual’s life and challenges. Our goal is to help people build strength, confidence, and a positive relationship with their health.

What I Wish I Had Known

Looking back, there are a few things I wish someone had told me when I was first diagnosed:

  • Diabetes is more than numbers. Your feelings, lifestyle, and challenges matter just as much as your blood sugar levels.

  • Movement should feel good. Exercise is not a punishment for eating; it’s a way to celebrate what your body can do.

  • Food is nourishment, not the enemy. Learning to enjoy food without fear is possible and essential.

  • Support makes a difference. You don’t have to face this alone. Finding someone who understands your story can change everything.

  • Early action matters. The sooner you get real support, the easier it is to manage your health and avoid complications.

How We Approach Nutrition and Fitness Differently

At PerformanceRX, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all plans. Instead, we work closely with each person to understand their unique situation. Here’s how we do it:

  • Listening first. We start by hearing your story, your struggles, and your goals.

  • Setting realistic goals. Small, achievable steps build confidence and lasting change.

  • Focusing on balance. We help you find a way to enjoy food and movement without guilt or fear.

  • Educating with empathy. We explain how diabetes works and what you can do, in clear, simple terms.

  • Providing ongoing support. Managing diabetes is a journey, and we’re here for every step.

A Message for Those Facing Pre-Diabetes

If you’ve been told your A1C is “a little high,” don’t wait. This moment is an opportunity to take control with the right support. Pre-diabetes is often mishandled, leaving people confused and without direction. You deserve a clear roadmap and practical tools to improve your health.

Remember, early support can reduce the time and struggle ahead. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

My journey from confusion and fear to strength and understanding fuels everything I do. I want to help others find their way, just like I did. If you or someone you love is facing diabetes or pre-diabetes, know that there is hope and help available.

Take the first step today. Reach out, ask questions, and find the support that sees you as a whole person—not just a diagnosis.

Together, we can change the way diabetes care feels and works.
